ACTION FOR COMPASSION
GHANA
Action For Compassion Ghana is a non-profit organization based in Elmina Cape Coast, created to empower women, youth, and children through sewing projects, art, and education.
EDUCATION PROGRAM
Action For Compassion Ghana established an education program for street children every Tuesday, known as Classes and Activities on the Beach. Many children do not attend school due to the economic limitations of their families, most of whom live on the streets and beaches in fishing communities. The organization mobilizes as many children as it can feed during the day every Tuesday. A tent is set up on the beach where they are taught to read and write, in addition to participating in sports. The organization also seeks sponsors to enroll the children in formal schools, aiming to keep them off the streets and beaches. Additionally, activities such as football, basketball, volleyball, and others are promoted to keep them engaged and away from the streets.
Action For Compassion Ghana, in collaboration with Beyond The Pivot (BTP) from the University of Hong Kong, offers classes at Christian Christ Care International in Bantuma, Elmina.
WOMEN’S TRAINING PROGRAM
The women’s training program is a six-month sewing project aimed at underprivileged women in the community. Between 10 and 12 women are recruited each time, totaling between 20 and 24 women per year. They are taught to sew various types of bags, such as backpacks, drawstring bags, shopping bags, tote bags, purses, and more, using African fabrics. Sewing instructors teach them skills from measuring, calculating, cutting, folding, handling the machine, to sewing. Computer instructors teach them how to set up their online business after graduation when they start their own businesses. Meetings are held 4 days a week, from Monday to Thursday, and the center provides meals on each meeting day.
